Cold & Sore Throat

What causes a sore throat?
Sore throats are common, especially in children, and are usually caused by viral or bacterial infections. Most sore throats are mild and resolve on their own, but persistent pain may indicate a more serious infection, such as strep throat. Germs can spread through close contact or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth.

How is a sore throat diagnosed?
Your provider at Costa Mesa Medical Clinic will review your symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, and cough, and examine your throat for signs of infection. Redness or white patches at the back of the throat may indicate strep. A quick throat swab can confirm a strep infection during your visit.

What treatments are available?

  • Viral infections:
Viral sore throats do not respond to antibiotics. Relief is focused on comfort—drinking plenty of fluids, soothing with ice pops, and using over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

  • Strep throat:
If strep throat is diagnosed, antibiotics are prescribed. Improvement is typically seen within 1–2 days, but it’s essential to complete the full course to prevent recurrence.

How do you know if it’s tonsillitis or a sore throat?
The tonsils help fight infections, but sometimes the infection remains in the tonsils, causing swelling and repeated soreness. Tonsillitis can make breathing through the mouth difficult and cause throat pain. In cases of recurrent tonsillitis, your provider may recommend a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils.
